High Doses of Anacardium Occidentale Nut Shell Extract Induce Oxidative Damage in Cardiac and Renal Organs of Wistar Rats

Anacardium occidentale (Cashew) is a plant reported to show several biological activities. The aim of this study examine the effects methanol extract nut shell on antioxidant status and histological features in cardiac renal tissues rats. Shells were obtained from nut, air-dried, pulverized, subjected Soxhlet extraction obtain (AONSE). Forty-five male Wistar rats divided into nine groups (5 each), given oral gavage corn oil (Control), 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 400 mg/kg AONSE, every other day for twenty-eight days. After sacrifice, heart kidney removed two portions each; one portion was homogenized biochemical assays, while fixed formalin histopathology. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels organs spectrophotometrically assayed. Histopathology also done. SOD catalase reduced at high doses AONSE relative control. has no significant GPx, GST MDA organs, comparable Photomicrographs show, myocardial distortions fibrosis, glomerular fluid accumulation hemorrhagic fibrosis observed kidney, doses, as against control low AONSE. This shows that could induce cytological derangements rats, possibly via oxidative mechanism.
